How Instagram engagement rate is calculated

  • By followers

    (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100

The standard way to compare public profiles, for example when vetting creators. Anyone can work it out.

  • By reach

    (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ reach × 100

Better for your own posts, because it only counts people who saw the post. Reach is in Instagram Insights, so only the account owner sees it.

  • Several posts

Add up totals for a set of posts and enter the number of posts. The tool shows the average rate per post.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

By followers, above 1% is good and above 3% is excellent for creators. The average across all accounts was 0.48% in Q1 2026.

Should I use followers or reach?

Use followers to compare accounts. Use reach for your own posts, since it ignores followers who never saw the post.

Do saves and shares count?

Yes. Saves and shares are strong signals of interest, so this calculator counts them with likes and comments.

Why do big accounts have lower rates?

Many followers stop seeing or reacting to posts over time, so the rate by followers usually drops as an account grows.
