Is TikTok Shop safe? Red flags and what to check
Buying on TikTok Shop is safest when you can see who you’re buying from. These are the signs our checker looks for, and how to check them yourself.
| Red flag | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Price far below other shops | Very low prices on branded or popular products are a common sign of knockoffs or bait listings | Compare the price with three or more shops selling the same product |
| Brand-new shop with lots of 5-star reviews | A sudden spike of 5-star reviews can mean incentivised or fake reviews | Look at review dates, buyer photos and whether reviews repeat the same short phrases |
| High rating from very few reviews | A 4.9 from 30 reviews tells you much less than a 4.6 from 3,000 | Read the 1- and 2-star reviews, and how many reviews have photos |
| Request to pay outside TikTok | Payments by DM, bank transfer or another website can’t be refunded through your TikTok order page | Only pay in TikTok’s checkout |
| Long or vague delivery time | Orders shipped from far away can take weeks, and “late” becomes hard to judge | Check “ships from” and the estimated delivery date on the product page |
| No return policy shown | It is harder to know what you can send back and how | Look for the returns section on the product page before you pay |
| Slow or no replies to messages | Problems after delivery take longer to fix | Send a short question before you buy and see how fast the shop answers |
Shop age, ratings, review counts, delivery estimates and return policies are read from public TikTok Shop listings. Sales volume and the trust score are our estimates and are labelled.
Frequently asked questions
Is TikTok Shop safe to buy from?
TikTok Shop is TikTok's own marketplace. You pay through TikTok's checkout and orders come with TikTok Shop's return and refund policies. How safe a purchase is still depends on the seller, so check the shop's rating, reviews, age and return policy before you buy, and never pay outside the app.
Is TikTok Shop legit or a scam?
TikTok Shop itself is a legitimate marketplace run by TikTok. Like any marketplace it has some weak sellers: knockoff products, very slow shipping or listings that don't match what arrives. A TikTok Shop legit checker like this one flags those signs before you order.
How do I spot a fake TikTok Shop seller?
Watch for a brand-new shop with a sudden burst of 5-star reviews, a price far below other sellers, vague delivery times and no return policy on the product page. Read the 1- and 2-star reviews and look for buyer photos. A request to pay by DM or on another website is a red flag.
What if my TikTok Shop order never arrives?
Contact the seller first from your order page in the TikTok app. If that doesn't solve it, use the same order page to request a refund or return. Don't pay outside the app: payments made by DM, bank transfer or another website can't be refunded through your TikTok order page.
